Classification systems are used by scientists to help us understand the natural world. When objects or living things are classified, they are simply sorted into a group with other similar objects or living things. Rocks can be classified by their size, shape, texture, color, luster, layers, and crystal size. Luster refers to how light is reflected from the surface of a mineral. Words like shiny, metallic, and dull describe luster.
